Flamstead Estate sits at over 3,300 feet above sea level in the area where coffee production first began in Jamaica. In 1728, the Governor of Jamaica, Sir Nicholas Lawes introduced coffee seedlings in the parish of St. Andrew. Coffee production was first reported at Flamstead, St. Andrew, in 1764.
Edgars Uncle Keble was instrumental in the formation of the Flamstead Estate of today. Having persuaded Ambassador Carlyle Dunkley to grow Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee and establish the farm in 1982. Carlyle’s son Stephen now runs this family business and remains firm friends with Edgar and Blue Mountain Coffee.
Coffee production in Jamaica began in the foothills of the St. Andrew mountains and gradually extended into the steep interior of the eastern Blue Mountain range. This includes the ideally suited coffee growing region in the Blue Mountain range within which Flamstead Estate is located. The coffee benefits from its usual covering by the cool mist of the Jamaican Blue Mountains, and flourishes in the shade of banana, plantain and inga vera trees.
Blue Mountain Coffee is honored to team directly with the Dunkley Family and offer a limited supply of this outstanding coffee with its unique attributes. We are the exclusive ecommerce distributor for Flamstead Estate coffee in the United States.
We offer a Classic Flat Bean and exclusive Peaberry. Flamstead Peaberry is an extremely small crop. Thanks to Edgars personal relationship with Flamstead Estate, we have exclusively secured one of the most prestigious Blue Mountain Peaberry coffees available.
This coffee is carefully roasted to a beautiful Medium Roast. It uncovers a light coffee with notes of vanilla and honey leaving a tingling sweet taste on the tip of one’s tongue. Roasted to the second crack, this dark roast coffee is delightful with its hint of sweetness, chocolate, spice, and smoky flavor.
I can see him now, as vividly as on the day, … Mr Keble Munn .. dressed in an army green shirt and matching shorts right below the knees with his signature black beret and sporting a thick mustache. He always seemed to be smiling, a mischievous twinkle in his eyes and a quick wit, Edgar reminds us so much of his Uncle Keble.
In 1982, Keble and former Prime Minister Michael Manley encouraged Dad, aka Carlyle Dunkley to grow Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee, and he started our farm at Flamstead, St Andrew. My brother Graham and I were kids and met Keble and toured his coffee factory. As soon as we got our driving licenses, we were put to work delivering our fresh cherry coffee berries to Mr Munn’s factory. The Selector/headman would stop all the other Farmers waiting to deliver and say “unnu come yah come look pon kaffee! A so coffee fi look fresh, pretty and bright red!!” It was not uncommon for us to receive a call from Keble the following morning to commend us on our quality.
Fast forward 20 years and in April 2001, Dad attended his only Specialty Coffee Association of America trade show in South Beach, Miami, to witness Edgar accepting a Lifetime Award on behalf of his Uncle Keble. As our coffee knowledge grew, from touring other coffee producing and consuming countries, we knew that we were producing one of the finest coffees in the world at our little district and farm.
We established our own eco-friendly coffee wet mill, at Flamstead, to pulp with spring water; and our own Dry Mill, to finish our coffee in small batches and start the journey of our coffee to your cup. Our coffee has been enjoyed throughout the world from Asia to Europe to the Americas.
The bonds of friendship and ethical business continue through another generation of the Dunkley and Munn family and have extended to Edgar’s business partner Chuck Holmgreen. We are especially proud that Flamstead Estate Jamaica Blue Mountain became the first Estate Coffee to be listed on Edgar Munn’s original www.bluemountaincoffee.com site.
We commit to delivering to you the very best, from our Farm, Flamstead Estate, to your cup.
Peaberry beans are the result of a natural mutation found in under 10% of each harvest, which results in one bean developing within the coffee berry instead of the "Classic" two. The Peaberry bean, having not had to share nutrients with a twin, has a unique flavor profile which many consider to be superior.
